Today around 80% of cocoa beans are from Africa, mainly destined for use by the large companies. This situation came about from European colonists deciding to use shorter sea routes to bring cocoa bean production areas and user countries closer together.

The most aromatic cocoa beans are from elsewhere, from less well-known locations. They can be found in the ‘cocoa belt’: countries on either side of the equator, around the globe. The cocoa beans used by  Chocolaterie de l’Opéra® are sourced solely from these exceptional lands.

They are often regions where the rarest plantations have been preserved, mostly islands, in tropical climates: Madagascar, Papua New Guinea, Cuba, Brazil, Belize, Java Island, Venezuela, Ecuador, Vietnam, to name but a few.
